Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Dual Language program the same as a bilingual program?
The Dual Language Immersion program is a bilingual program. Bilingual education is the umbrella term for different types of language programs. Our program focuses on developing language proficiency, academic standards, and literacy skills in English and Spanish.
What are the benefits of having my child participate in a Dual Language Program?
Research shows that learning multiple languages at an early age:
-
Increases cognitive flexibility that results in higher-order critical thinking skills as well as in problem solving abilities
-
Allows students to become fully proficient in other languages at no detriment to their English development
-
Provides students with the ability to communicate with diverse individuals
-
Exposes students to other countries and assists students in appreciating people from other countries
-
Increases job opportunities in many careers
How can I help my child at home if I do not speak Spanish?
You can help your child access resources provided by the teacher. Online access to curricular and classroom materials is available to all PPDLA families. Additionally, we encourage all parents to expose their children to Spanish at home by playing family games, watching movies/videos, listening to music and podcasts, and reading books in Spanish.
Can the academic content be translated?
Teachers will provide leveled instruction to support students at individual needs; however, translating is not part of a dual language model.
What if my child is not able to meet the Spanish proficiency targets?
If your child is not meeting the proficiency targets, a conference will need to be scheduled where the teacher, parent, and administration may need to decide what support is necessary for your child to meet the Spanish language learning goals.
Is there an English-only option available?
In a dual language immersion program, there is no English-only option.
Will my child be expected to participate in the Spanish portion of the day?
Yes, enrollment in our school requires your child to participate in the Spanish portion of our day. This will include Spanish Language Arts as well as Math, Science and/or Social Studies, depending on the grade level.
