Chef Kent Visits Cafeterias to Train Staff on Speed Scratch Cooking

The Life Time Foundation’s Chef Kent has been visiting Laveen schools to train child nutrition staff on preparing ramen bowls with chicken and oven-fried rice. They will conduct student taste tests and get feedback to determine if these items will make it onto our menu next school year.

Laveen’s Child Nutrition Department has partnered with the Life Time Foundation to support its mission to ensure all of our students receive nutritious meals to support academic excellence in a positive environment. Chef Kent periodically provides culinary training to staff to implement more speed-scratch cooking, work to reduce the amount of highly processed foods on our menus, and phase out foods that contain “ingredients of concern.”

Governing Board Clerk Michele Anderson joined in the lesson and was charged with preparing fresh ginger for the first culinary lesson.

M.C. Cash and Paseo Pointe Advance in “Read to the Final Four”

Read to the Final Four is a literacy challenge aimed at creating a lifelong love and interest in reading for third-grade students across the state of Arizona. This was created to support the NCAA’s commitment to education. Schools, teachers, and students participating in this tournament-style program have the chance to win fun prizes and compete to be named the Championship School.

Students have been logging their minutes read. The average minutes read per student per school were calculated, with each school’s best four weeks identified for qualification to the bracket competition. Hundreds of schools throughout Arizona are participating in this year’s competition, including all nine of our Laveen schools.

On Monday, January 29, the top 68 schools advancing in the brackets were officially announced. We are pleased to announce that M.C.Cash and Paseo Pointe Dual Language Academy have advanced and qualified for the bracket challenge. All of our other schools are still competing in the Best of the Rest Challenge through March 3.
